A factor is a number that can

divide into a number evenly.

EX. 60-1,60,2,30,3,20,5,12,

That may not be all of them, but do you

understand how 3 goes into 60 20

times. Also 5 goes into 60 12 times.

Greatest Common Factor

The GCF of something is the

Greatest Common Factor of 2 numbers.

EX.

30-1,30,2,15,3,10,5,6

42-1,42,2,21,3,14,6,7

the greatest common factor would be 6,

because 6 is the greatest number that goes

into 30 and 42 evenly.

EX.

75-1,75,3,25,5,15

90-1,90,2,45,3,30,18,5,15,6,10,9

in this case the greatest common

factor would be 15, because 15 is the

greatest common factor

that goes into 75 and 90 evenly.

Vocabulary

Base-the base is the number that is used as a factor.

(the larger number of the 2 in the problem.)

Exponent-the number that indacates how many times the base is multiplying itself by.

(the problem it is the smaller number)

How do you do exponents???

An exponent is not the base of and eqation.

It is the opposite number, also known as the

smaller number in the corner when you look

at the problem. Here are a few examples below.

ex. 73

This means 7 to the 3rd power.

The way that you solve this eqation is

you would do 7 times itself 3 times.

7x7x7=343

7x7=49

49x7=343

ex.45

4x4x4x4x4=1024

4x4=16

16x4=64

64x4=256

256x4=1024
